One of Canada’s most celebrated artists, Emily Carr (1871 - 1945, Victoria, BC) is widely recognized for her paintings of the Pacific Northwest Coast landscape. Her work was informed by several influences including Indigenous cultures, French Post-Impressionism and the mentorship of many artists who she befriended in Canada.
Carr slowly began to achieve commercial and critical success in the concluding years of her life, yet the renown she enjoyed then does not compare to the esteem in which she is held today.
Her independence as a woman; her resolve to travel frequently and unaccompanied; and her devotion to art despite the obstacles, distractions and criticism remain inspirational. Her paintings continue to influence how we view the landscapes of British Columbia.
The Vancouver Art Gallery acquired its first painting by Carr in 1937, which was followed by the first exhibition of her work in 1938. Before her death in 1945, Carr bequeathed many of her artworks to the people of British Columbia, to be held in trust by the Vancouver Art Gallery.
